Our leadership model operates in two ways, across the whole federation and individually within our schools.
 
We share a common governing body between our schools and have a headteachers group led by a strategic head.  Each school retains its own headteacher supported by a senior leadership team of assistant heads.  Direct school involvement of governors is through a school advisory group for each school, a subcommittee of the governing body that includes associate members for a particular school.
 
During the formation of our hard federation we researched a number of leadership structures for our schools.  We believed that bringing together 5 schools with around 3,000 pupils needed a leadership structure that strengthened our common goals but retained a direct focus within each school. We valued the stability that the position of headteacher brought to each of our schools and were uncomfortable about appointing an "executive head".  We wanted a stragegic leader, not a manager and so the concept of a "strategic head" developed from there.
 

The role of the Strategic Head

 

The role of the strategic head is to:

 

  • Challenge the community of the Ashington School’s Federation, pupils, staff, parents, governors and Trustees, to achieve the highest possible standards for all learners
  • Be accountable to the Governors of the Federation for working with school leaders for ensuring that the best quality teaching and learning, support, guidance and personal development are available to all learners
  • In conjunction with Federation school headteachers, assure the accountability of leaders at all levels in delivering the aims of the Ashington Learning Partnership Trust
  • Communicate the vision of the Ashington Learning Partnership Trust within the Federation to its stakeholders and outside the Federation to key bodies and organisations on a local, regional and national level
  • Coordinate leadership activities across the Federation so that they are strategic and developmental
  • Assure the quality of all activities of the Federation.
